Victorian Government Announcers plans to Cull Victorian Alpine National Brumbies

The very last thing that we expected the Friday before Christmas was to have the long awaited Draft Plan of Management for the Brumbies of the Alpine National Park in Victoria released. To be clear, this is a Draft Plan that Parks Victoria has been consulting with ‘key stakeholders’ on since 2013. It was originally planned for release in December 2013. T

here has been absolutely NO rush to get this through, so it is hard not to be critical of the timing. The Plan has been called the Protection of the Alpine National Park – Feral Horse Strategic Action Plan 2018-2020 (Draft)  - even the title is concerning.

Read the plan here: https://engage.vic.gov.au/alpine-national-park-feral-horse-strategic-action-plan

Clearly, Parks Victoria think that by releasing the Draft Action Plan the very last working day before Christmas, will assist them in brushing it under the carpet!

The aim of this page is to:

  • advise of some of the very clear flaws, injustices and inconsistencies in the Draft Action Plan
  • inform about the benefits that Brumbies can bring to the environment in moderate numbers
  • save the small healthy Bogong High Plains population from complete extermination
  • lower the  figure of 400 Brumbies removed from the Eastern Alps region of the Alpine National Park
  • request support for rehoming options for Brumbies who are to be removed as part of this Draft Action Plan
  • assist with contact details for feedback to Parks Victoria on the Draft Action Plan
