When we take in Brumbies, we generally aim to take around one third youngsters (aged up to 4yo), one third adult mares and one third adult stallions. Outside of that, we simply can’t know what will arrive here in terms of age and suitability for rehoming.
In order for us to feel that Brumbies are suitable for rehoming through our normal programs, they need to be happily able to be paddocked and caught in a mixed sex large paddock. Every Brumby that comes through our program has full Veterinary health case, including gelding all stallions. Being a gelding makes domestic life much easier and less stressful for our stallions. Obviously, some older stallions don’t really get the memo that they are now geldings. Equally, some of our Brumbies of either sex simply don’t settle into being domestic horses. Very very rarely, we have had health issues such as swollen joints from old injuries that make us decide not to rehome. This is very rare and out of almost 700 Brumbies, we have only ever really had around 30 that weren’t suitable for general rehoming after a period of time here.
Ideally, we would rehome most Brumbies that come through our program as it leaves us room here at our Brumby Junction Sanctuary to offer a lifetime home to those Brumbies who aren’t suitable for rehoming. Our permanent residents here are partnered up with a ‘forever partner’. Some will live with just that friend while others will live out in our larger paddocks, helping new arrivals to settle in. Many of our older Brumbies thrive in this situation – as close to wild as we can manage for them.
